AI has been in use, commercially, since the 1990's. Remember Clippy (the paper clip pictured above) from Microsoft Office 97? Clippy was powered by AI. Autocomplete, a feature of many products, is powered by AI. Spellcheck, available in many products beyond Microsoft Word, is also powered by AI. So what is AI good at?
- Automation - AI is great at repetitive tasks like entering data, picking out stock at a warehouse and different manufacturing processes
- Predictions - AI can take a lot of data and make decisions based on that data
- Recognition - AI can not only recognize voices, but it can also recognize patterns in very large datasets such as seeing trends in consumer purchasing
With these skills in mind, we see AI successfully used:
- as Chatbots helping to improve customer service
- in Fraud Detection, analyzing patterns and flagging activity such as unusual spending or logins
- in Healthcare, monitoring patients and alerting staff to unusual activity it is programmed to look for
- in Self-driving Cars by machine learning and visual recognition to assist the vehicle in knowing its surroundings
- in Streaming Services, learning about your viewing habits via observation
